OUTLAWS VIDEO PROBLEMS!

Ok I feel like Karefree writing in this font but ohh well. I usally get alot of questions from people asking me about FPS (Frames Per Second) and 3dfx issues So I thought I would make a little addition to my webspace.

Ok first thing there are 3 ways of playing Outlaws in DirectDraw (default) , MGL (Files on CD) or 3dfx (New Video Card) . (Those options there go from lowest FPS to Highest FPS) There is also window video mode witch uses GDI driver or something but it's not really recomenned pretty much the same as DirectDraw. You'll probably notice that Outlaws has no support for Direct3d accerlation. too bad yes I know but it's true.

DIRECTDRAW :

Directdraw is the default setting for Outlaws. So if you just launch up the game you will be in DirectDraw mode. This mode is the slowest and the oldest video mode but everybody's PC can support it. (so it seems) . In this mode I got about 20 FPS in 640x480 mode. If you are using this mode, I strongly suggest you try MGL video mode you will get much faster FPS. But if forever reason you can't use MGL or 3DFX. You will have to use this. :( So put it on low res and smaller screen to get better FPS.

MGL DRIVERS:

This mode is great you can get screaming fast FPS without having a 3dfx card. All you need to do is copy the files from the Outlaws CD # 1 in the support/mgl directory and copy them ALL and paste them into your Outlaws directory on your C:/ Drive. Make sure you copy all files sometimes they will be hidden goto View and Select show ALL Files. That way you can get this video mode working! After that have fun. Now this mode doesn't seem to work on my Voodoo Banshee PCI or Voodoo 3 3000 AGp cards which is wierd. but let's move on.

3DFX Glide MODE :

3DFX glide mode is the best way to play Outlaws It feels like a totally better game with improved graphics and FPS. You'll notice your FPS will depend on two things.. Your Video card wethier it be a Voodoo 1,2,Banshee,3. and your Processor speed. If you have anything from a P-90 to P-200mmx you will probably most benefit from a Voodoo 1 or Banshee if you want a good 2d card as well. If you have a PII-233 to PIII-600 you can pretty much get any of them Esp Voodoo 2 and above because they will FLY with all that processing speed.

TROUBLES: Some people have trouble with a Voodoo 3 card. I know I did I was getting 85 FPS which may seem high, but for a V3 3000 it is not at all. So I talked to the video expert Paleface and he said that the reason I'm getting such low Frame Rate is because of VSYNC which is limiting my framerates so we MUST DISABLE IT AT ALL COSTS!! Well maybe not but let's try to get rid of it anyway. You will need a little program which you can grab from Paleface's web Site called the Voodoo 3 Overclocker. It sounds scary doesn't it? Well it's only 126K

Voodoo 3 Overclocker Program [ What a Leech I am putting a Link to paleface's Server :( ]

This program will allow you to have a tab in your Display Properties for your V3. You will be able to disable VSYNC for Glide mode which is what you want. You can also overclock it to make it go faster and get better FPS! (DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! YOU MAY OVERHEAT YOUR CPU BY OVERCLOCKING YOUR V3 or DAMAGE YOUR HARDWARE or both**) Ok so after I disabled VSYNC (not N'SYNC *what an awful joke I'm sorry couldn't help myself*:) I was getting 410 FPS and 500+ in single player when I was standing up against a wall. SO disable VSYNC if your still getting bad FPS try boosting up your Monitor's Refresh rates to about 75-85hz you don't want to overheat your monitor by putting it over 85hz. (own risk again)

Well I hope this helped some people understand Outlaws FPS and Video Modes Better if you want more info check out Paleface's FPS VIDEO pAge. Well have fun and don't use DirectDraw if you can use MGL drivers!
